John Peyton Cooke clearly did a great deal of research to write this book, which is an excellent blend of truth and fiction. The murders in question actually occurred, many of the characters-- e.g., Elliot Ness, Mayor Burton, Sheriff O'Donnell-- were real people, and the book follows the real-life case and its investigation quite closely/5(6).

With the immediacy of true crime and the taut suspense of a gripping mystery, Torsos recreates this sensational case as a novel, starting when a naked, decapitated corpse is discovered in a desolate ravine near a downtown slum/5(6). Arriving in Cleveland with a determination to clean up the city, Eliot /5. All that said, Torsos wouldn't be a pulp fiction novel if it weren't for some hackneyed dialogue and graphic violence - of which there is plenty. The oft mentioned chicken and trucker scene is a bit too graphic for me, but it is, sadly, probably more real than many /5(6).

Toros & Torsos is the second book of McDonald's starring Hector Lassiter (I'm now reading the first, Head Games) and it was an entertaining, well written noir-ish mystery.

I particularly enjoyed the melding of literary history - Hemingway, Dos Passo, etc. - with art Torsos book fiction/5. “Toros and Torsos” is really a character study, primarily of Lassiter and Hemingway as they age and, especially in Hem’s case, grow progressively more infirm.

The book is Torsos book of the better fictional portrayals of Hemingway I’ve encountered/5(14). Inappropriate The list (including its title or description) facilitates illegal activity, or contains hate speech or ad hominem attacks on a fellow Goodreads member or author.

Headless trunks litter the grimy, Depression-era Cleveland scenery in a raunchy crime novel—Cooke's hardcover debut—based on actual, awful events. Homicide detective Hank ``Lucky'' Lambert, perhaps the only cop in Cleveland not on the take, leads the investigation into a growing number of grisly murders.

It's revealed early on that the victims have all been decapitated and largely Author: John Peyton Cooke. Torsos is a great novel. Set in Cleveland, in the `thirties, it fictionalizes the notorious Torso Slayer killings through the figure of Hank "Lucky" Lambert, a cop who knows more 5/5(3).
